Hunter Clubs Struggle to Fill Rosters

Without rooms to serve as hubs for cultural exchange, clubs are losing students and in turn leaders.

As Pride Month draws to a close, queer and trans p As Pride Month draws to a close, queer and trans people across the country brace for more anti-trans legislation. Though laws banning gender-affirming care in Arkansas and Alabama have been struck down, similar restrictions have been popping up in other states. Despite negative and lonely stereotypes surroundin Despite negative and lonely stereotypes surrounding commuter schools, students at Hunter College still have a chance of having fun and fostering lifelong friendships. 

“We do our best to make everyone feel like they have a home with us,” said Dylan Garnier, Zeta Phi Alpha Treasurer. 

The school has fraternities and sororities on campus that focus on philanthropy, academic success and creating connections.

Between its reputation as a commuter school and is Between its reputation as a commuter school and issues with communication, Latine students struggle to build community amongst each other at Hunter.

According to Data USA, about 28.6 percent of Hunter students are of Hispanic/Latine descent as of 2020. They edge out their white peers by 0.1 percent, who make up 28.5 percent of the student population. However, there are only three clubs listed on Hunter’s website that highlight Hispanic/Latine heritage. Events like the Latino Medical Student Association’s “Salsa Night” and the Romance Language Department’s “Spanish as Language Engagement Day” are meant to encourage students to be more engaged on campus.

“I’ve looked for other Latino clubs and I [had] difficulty finding them,” said Patino. “I think what we have here is a hidden gem.”

Hunter College recently renovated some new spots j Hunter College recently renovated some new spots just in time for the upcoming fall semester. Featured is one of the newest hangouts, the Harriet Gruber Lounge in the Baker Theater Building. One student even said “the lounge doesn’t even feel like Hunter. It reminds me of a cozy cafe in the city.”

Hunter College’s Brookdale Residence Hall is in Hunter College’s Brookdale Residence Hall is in danger of being torn down, and Hunter students have decided to fight against its destruction.

The building, located at 425 E 25th St, is home to over 600 students and is viewed as the most affordable CUNY housing unit available. Its plans for destruction have caused concerns for future and current students.

Alumni and former resident of Brookdale Sarah D’Alessandro, decided to fight for the building by creating Back Brookdale.

“We should not have SPARC at the expense of affordable housing, especially Brookdale,” said Sarah D’Alessandro.

Laila Gad (first from right) plans to visit Singap Laila Gad (first from right) plans to visit Singapore this summer. But, rather than taking snaps of The Merlion or staying at Marina Bay, her itinerary includes taking a trip to the neighborhood of Tiong Bahru and documenting the hardships of an aging population caused by rising temperatures.

A seventh Pulitzer Fellow from Hunter, Laila Gad aspires to be a climate reporter.

“Journalism is the art of being able to raise awareness,” says Gad. “I felt like being able to practice it here in America is sort of a way of like reclaiming journalism.”

Students Karina and Isabel come to the Hillel for the friendship, educational and community resources, and the seemingly endless supply of bagels.
