On Campus Multifaith Center Fosters Religious, Diverse Practices

Through its Multifaith Center at Thomas Hunter, the college commits itself to embracing diversity and unity on campus. The center serves spiritual and religious needs of students.

“If you want to pray, you can come here, if you want to just finish your assignment in a quiet space you can come here, if you want to learn about different faiths and various other interesting things you can come here.” Kaityln Chacko, junior, member at Intervarsity Christian Fellowship.

The Multifaith Center houses Muslim Student Association, Hunter Hillel, Hindu Student Association, Korea Campus Crusade for Christ and the Sikh Student Association.

  “Religion is an intimate relationship between yourself and god and nobody else.In order to build on your faith, that is something you have to do by yourself. It’s not something someone can instill in you,” said Ayah Ahmed, freshman, member at Muslim Student Association.

  “I was born and raised in New York, but my parents are from Trinidad, and I have always seen them practice Hinduism growing up. Having a space to practice my faith on campus brings me so close to home,” said Shirvan Persad, freshman at Hunter. “It’s been a place that has been so comforting and beautiful. I get to practice, learn and know more about my faith, god and prayers each day here.”

  “Being in the Multi Faith Center helps me relax and socialize,” said Azariel Perry, freshman at Hunter College. "Playing the traditional instrument and listening to the sounds it produces makes me calm and focuses my mind."
