This site was created in honor of the Jack Newfield and the visiting journalism professorship at Hunter College created in 2005 in remembrance of Jack’s muckraking journalism skills . In addition to honoring Jack Newfield it also honors the professors that have taught courses in his memory thanks to this professorship created by Newfield’s family and Hunter College. The professorship continues to strive at Hunter College each spring and chooses an individual with outstanding qualifications to teach a course that honors Jack Newfield and his investigative journalism skills. Jack Newfield
Jack Newfield was a writer with a dedication to the advocacy of social causes and political reforms. His career began in the 1960’s as a columnist in New York for the Village Voice (A definitive source of information for news, music, movies, restaurants, reviews and events in New York). Working as a columnist for twenty-four years he wrote daily columns deeply investigating and reporting, giving a voice to his personal style of writing. After twenty-four years at the Village Voice Newfield continued his journalism at the New York Post, New York Sun, New York Daily News and The Nation Magazine. He continued to investigate and report in his own style of writing and truly gave a unique voice to his reports. In addition to being an employee of several well known New York news paper and magazine companies he also was the author of several books and collaborated on quite a few documentaries. He was recognized for his talents and achievements in 1990 when he received the George Polk Award for Investigative Journalism and in 1991 when he received an Emmy for the documentary he did on Don King. Although Jack Newfield is not with us today he is remembered for his wonderful contributions to our society with his remarkable talent and activist writing style.
