Finding a job as a college student can be an overwhelming task. Some jobs pay too little for too much commitment, require a long-distance commute, or clash with the student’s class schedule. Fortunately, Hunter College provides a variety of student jobs that accommodate a rigorous academic lifestyle while allowing students to make some money on the side.

The first place to refer to for job search help is the Career Center located in the East Building in room 805. The Center hosts helpful workshops every week of the semester. Students can use these networking possibilities by getting acquainted with the Career Center and their services. They also provide personalized help with cover letters or resume writing. “We also post department job postings on our website, Handshake,” said Arterio Rodrigues, an IT specialist at the Career Center. Handshake is an online platform where employers can recruit college students. Rodrigues also says different departments throughout Hunter tell the career center when openings are available.

Sometimes, certain positions do not get posted at all and rely on personal recommendations as a hiring strategy. However, a few places at Hunter look to hire students every semester with accommodating work schedules.

“It’s right here; I can go to it right after my class,” said Mia Rothstein, a peer tutor at the Rockowitz Writing Center, about the convenience of an on-campus job. “I feel like [the Writing Center] is more aligned with my academic interests and the path I want to go on.”

Are you also interested in getting a job related to your career path? Or are you simply great at math, science, writing or foreign languages? A position at one of the following tutoring centers might be a great fit for you.

  • The Mary P. Dolciani Math Learning Center

The Dolciani Math Center has a few part-time student positions available that could fit anyone’s skill level. Dolciani hires students for positions such as Circulation Area Assistant, Tutor and Lab Supervisor. The pay ranges between $15-$22 per hour and these positions are available every semester for anyone interested in applying. You can find the Dolciani Math Center on the seventh floor of the East Building.

  • Skirball Science Learning Center

The Skirball Science Center is more complicated to apply to than the other tutoring centers, but it is a great opportunity. Students who excel in their science classes may receive an email from the Skirball Science Center about applying as a peer tutor. There is no application on their website, but you can visit them on the seventh floor of the East Building to inquire about the position.

  • Rockowitz Writing Center

The Rockowitz Writing Center provides writing tutoring in any discipline or major area. If you have completed ENGL 120 and ENGL 220 (or equivalent), you may be eligible to apply for a peer-tutor position. All peer tutors are paid $16 per hour. You can inquire for more information by visiting the seventh floor of the East Building library in the Silverstein Student Success Center.

  • The Leona and Marcy Chanin Language Center

Chanin Language Center provides tutoring for a variety of languages, ranging from Spanish to Hebrew. If you have met the language proficiency requirement at Hunter, you can be recommended as a peer tutor by foreign language Chairs. You can inquire for more information at the Language Center’s office, room 209 in the West Building.

If a tutoring job is not for you, the Undergraduate Student Government occasionally has part-time and full-time positions.

  • Undergraduate Student Government

Undergraduate Student Government hires students as staff to work in its office, located on the second floor of the Thomas Hunter Building. Rehan Hababi, an office manager at USG, shared an unexpected benefit of working an on-campus job around other students.

“It’s also very nice for my social life ‘cause it made me a bit more outgoing. I’m introverted, but I have to constantly speak to people, which has been throwing me off just a tad, but I got used to it,” said Rehan Hababi.

The positions have flexible schedules and pay $17-$18 per hour. Open positions are usually posted on USG’s Instagram page, so keep an eye out.
