“With the Eyes of others: Hungarian Artists of the Sixties and Seventies”

I went to Elizabeth Dee gallery to see “With the Eyes of others: Hungarian Artists of the Sixties and Seventies”. The exhibition presented “more than one hundred works by thirty artists active in the Hungarian Neo-avant-garde in the latter half of the 20th century. The exhibition was about introduction to the period, capturing the particular mood and texture of the non official art scene which was very interesting. Actually, it was little difficult to understand the meaning of Hungarian Neo-avant-garde just looking at the exhibiton because I am not familiar with Neo-avant-garde. However, it was interesting that there were photography of thirty artists active in the Hungarian Neo-avant-garde doing their works or taking photo with their works. Also, there were photos of different facial expression which was very interesting. I forgot the name of the photo but there was a photo of a woman holding a frame and making different facial expression was my best work. Through her different facial expression, I found that people has not only different facial expression but also different taste in art. Also, there were lots of paintings at the exhibiton. The paintings were very colorful and beautiful. Even though the painting were colored only with colorful color and couldn’t find any meaning but it felt very relief justing looking at the paintings.

From this exhibition, I learned that people has different taste in art. Some people like this kind of exhibiton and some poeple doesn’t like this kind of exhibiton because it is hard to find the meaning of photography and paintings. However, some arts seems nothing there is meaning. I realized that the each painting has meaning after I read the explaination. Even though it looks nothing there is hidden meaning.

Ian Cheng : Emissaries

I went to MoMA PS1 to see Ian Cheng : Emissaries. Emissaries is Ian Cheng’s first US museum solo presentation. This was a live simulation works using a video game which was very interesting.

There was a 10-foor-tall projection on the wall “Positioning viewers as observers who can follow the lives of specific characters as they interact within the simulated worlds and each other in an ever-changing environment.” The exhibition was collaborated with Twitch; the world’s leading video platform and community for gamers. This exhibition was popular for gamers because the exhibition made viewers to feel that they are in the video game world. When I first saw the Emissaries, I was very confusing because I am not a gamer. However, when I stayed in front of the screen and watched few minutes, I felt like I am at the inside of the screen. The video game wasn’t video game that we familiar so it didn’t look like a video game but it made viewers to involve the screen. There were lots of characters talking each other and it felt like I am one of the character. The one thing that left a lot to be desired was character’s conversation. There was a dialogue which was not English. Since the language was video game language it was difficult to understand character’s dialogue. It would be much better if the viewers could understand the dialogue. However, the dialogue was not a big problem. There was a background sound that made more realistic. I felt like I am at the screen because of the realistic sound. The one thing I really liked about the screen was that the simulation works using a video game made the viewers to involve with the simulation. Some screen showed very closer to the characters so it made me like I am next to these characters. Some screen showed flying scene with the point of view so it made the viewers flying. Just watching the screen didn’t make the viewers to involve the screen because of the video game scene. However, Ian Cheng used lot of different simulations so it made the viewers to involve with the screen easily. Even though, I couldn’t understand dialogue from the screen, I was able to involve with the screen because of the simulation and the background sound.

I really liked this exhibition because I have never seen exhibition like this before. Also, it was really interesting that video game can become an art. I learned that the viewers can understand and the viewers can involve to the screen with only the visual.

Lygia Pape: A Multitude of Forms

Lygia Pape: A Multitude of Forms is the first monographic exhibition in the United States. A Multitude of Forms is an exhibition at The Met Breuer. She combined geometric abstraction with space and body in a unique way. When you enter the exhibition room, you will see lots of sculptures, prints, photography, and short films. There were lots of interesting works in her exhibition. However, there was one short film that caught my eyes. The film called “O OVE” which means “The Egg”. This film was performed at Barra da Tijuca beach in 1967. The film was a single-channel digital video, super 8 film, color and 1 minute 20 sec. “O OVE” designated actors activate symbolic geometric props to create the drama of this work. The film shows three large cube-shaped “egg” and three actors. Each actor was in the large cube-shaped “egg” and then they rip off the box. They came out from the box and played small instrument with a big smile. The final scene showed Pape sitting on the beach in front of the large cube-shaped boxes and three actors were standing on the back of the large cube-shaped boxes. Finally, the image freeze. Pape “represented a generation’s utopian desire to create a new society” through the large cube-shaped “egg”. Through the large cube-shaped “egg”, Pape wanted to show the symbolism of rebirth.

I really liked the video because I could understand what Pape wanted to say through this video clearly. When the three actors rip the box and came out from the large cube-shaped “egg”, audiences could see their feelings because they were smiling and then playing small instrument and dancing. This showed that not only their situation but also their emotion. Even though the video was very short, the video included the main idea clearly. However, I wanted to see more images about Pape. Pape just appeared at the ending scene like 5 seconds just sitting so I wanted to see her more. Overall it was really interesting piece.
