“The Scribe” is a single-player game that incorporates dialogue, narrative, and pixel-based art in a 2D post-apocalyptic environment that explores personal feelings of fear, despair, and hope for the future. Recently, major world events have become irreversibly imprinted onto the life and psyche of myself and those around me—worsening climate change, threats of nuclear war, mass shootings, a global pandemic, and more. These events have induced emotions of helplessness and despair that tragedies are bound to repeat—but also hope that change can happen. I explore these conflicting emotions in the narrative-focused, interactive setting of “The Scribe,” in line with the post-apocalyptic genre used throughout history to examine a projected mixture of humanity’s fears, warnings, and curiosity on “what if.”
