Author and journalist Alyssa Katz will serve as the Jack Newfield Professor
\nin the spring semester, offering a course in urban investigative journalism to
\nselected students in Film & Media, Integrated Media Arts and Urban Affairs.
\n
\n Admission is by department permission. Applications to join the class are
\nbeing accepted now.<\/p>\n
The course is an extraordinary opportunity to explore how New York\u2019s future
\nwill be shaped with an award-winning writer.<\/p>\n
Titled \u201cWho Owns Public Housing?\u201d the class will employ first-person
\ninterviews, intensive document research, and an extensive use of old-fashioned
\nshoe leather to take stock of the public housing system as it weathers the
\nseverest challenges it has ever faced. <\/p>\n
Students will work individually and in teams to prepare a series of articles
\nfor the Newfield website and neighborhood and citywide publications, exploring
\nsuch issues as:
\n\u2022 the increasing segregation of New York City\u2019s poor into public housing, and
\nhow this affects life in the projects and the city as a whole;
\n\u2022 the ways in which developers and contractors have turned housing subsidies
\nand management contracts into big business;
\n\u2022 the low representation of immigrants in public housing and the struggles of
\nnew arrivals to get access to it;
\n\u2022 crime and law enforcement in and around public housing, and the tensions
\nbetween preserving public safety and civil liberties. <\/p>\n
The class will meet on Tuesdays from 3:10-6 p.m. Interested students
\nshould send a brief statement of what they hope to gain from the class to Prof.
\nBernard L. Stein at bstein@hunter.cuny.edu as soon as possible, and should ask a
