Applications to join the class are<br \/>\nbeing accepted now.<\/p>\n<p>    The course is an extraordinary opportunity to explore how New York\u2019s future<br \/>\nwill be shaped with an award-winning writer.<\/p>\n<p>    Titled \u201cWho Owns Public Housing?\u201d the class will employ first-person<br \/>\ninterviews, intensive document research, and an extensive use of old-fashioned<br \/>\nshoe leather to take stock of the public housing system as it weathers the<br \/>\nseverest challenges it has ever faced. <\/p>\n<p>    Students will work individually and in teams to prepare a series of articles<br \/>\nfor the Newfield website and neighborhood and citywide publications, exploring<br \/>\nsuch issues as:<br \/>\n\u2022   the increasing segregation of New York City\u2019s poor into public housing, and<br \/>\nhow this affects life in the projects and the city as a whole;<br \/>\n\u2022   the ways in which developers and contractors have turned housing subsidies<br \/>\nand management contracts into big business;<br \/>\n\u2022   the low representation of immigrants in public housing and the struggles of<br \/>\nnew arrivals to get access to it;<br \/>\n\u2022   crime and law enforcement in and around public housing, and the tensions<br \/>\nbetween preserving public safety and civil liberties. <\/p>\n<p>       The class will meet on Tuesdays from 3:10-6 p.m. Interested students<br \/>\nshould send a brief statement of what they hope to gain from the class to Prof.<br \/>\nBernard L.
