{"id":543,"date":"2009-12-02T15:32:19","date_gmt":"2009-12-02T19:32:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/jacknewfield\/?p=543"},"modified":"2009-12-02T15:33:49","modified_gmt":"2009-12-02T19:33:49","slug":"new-jack-newfield-professor-for-spring-2010","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/jacknewfield\/?p=543","title":{"rendered":"New Jack Newfield Professor for Spring 2010"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> Daily News columnist Errol Louis will serve as the Jack Newfield Professor<br \/>\nin the spring semester, offering a course in urban investigative journalism to<br \/>\nselected students in Film &#038; Media and Integrated Media Arts.<\/p>\n<p>    In the course, titled \u201cCrime, Punishment and the Inner-City: How to Stop<br \/>\nSpinning the Revolving Door Between the Street Corner and the Prison,\u201d students<br \/>\nwill examine two neighborhoods&#8211;the South Bronx and Central Harlem&#8211;and produce<br \/>\na series of multi-media reports on how the policies of prison officials,<br \/>\nprosecutors and parole and probation departments have created an expensive<br \/>\nrevolving door between low-income neighborhoods and New York&#8217;s jails and<br \/>\nprisons.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>    The class offers an extraordinary opportunity to work with an award-winning<br \/>\njournalist and to produce reporting that makes a difference. It will offer<br \/>\nstudents a crash-course in reporting and interviewing techniques designed to get<br \/>\nstudents up to professional standards quickly. The best completed work will be<br \/>\npublished in local media such as the Mott Haven Herald The Hunts Point Express,<br \/>\nthe Amsterdam News and the Black Star News. Audio reports suitable for broadcast<br \/>\nwill air on WWRL radio, and video interviews and essays will publish to a blog<br \/>\ncreated for the class.  <\/p>\n<p>    Admission is by department permission. Applications to join the class, which<br \/>\nwill meet on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m., are being accepted now. Interested<br \/>\nstudents should send a brief statement of what they hope to gain from the class<br \/>\nto Prof. Bernard L. Stein at bstein@hunter.cuny.edu as soon as possible, and<br \/>\nshould ask a teacher who knows their work to forward a recommendation to Prof.<br \/>\nStein.<\/p>\n<p>    In his Daily News column, Errol Louis writes on a wide range of political<br \/>\nand social affairs. He also hosts The Morning Show on radio station AM 1600<br \/>\nWWRL, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. every weekday. His guests have included Gov. David<br \/>\nPaterson, former President Jimmy Carter, filmmaker Michael Moore, and author<br \/>\nCornel West. In addition to his newspaper and radio work, he made more than 100<br \/>\nappearances as a CNN Contributor during the 2008 election season.
