Half of the street is blocked off and the ground is covered in construction debris and expired working permits, and the funding to complete the school has been rejected by Gov. This building was intended to include a new lab facility and resource center for nursing, pre-medicine and physical therapy students since the Brookdale campus and North Building labs are outdated. The school partnered with Memorial Sloan Kettering and the two organizations were going to share the facility. Construction began in 2015 and was expected to be completed this year, but work came to a halt when the money stopped flowing.<\/p>\n<p>According to Hunter\u2019s construction plan on their site, it would cost $300 million to build this new facility. Gale Brewer, the Manhattan borough president, says Hunter can\u2019t build this building without any funding from the state and as of now, the state has not released any funding for Hunter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state hasn\u2019t come through with the funding as far as our office knows,\u201d said Brewer\u2019s communication office.<\/p>\n<p>This lack of funding has left Hunter with labs that aren\u2019t up to par with the competitive and intense science program, the college claims.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_998\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 235px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-998 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4976-e1551909634542-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4976-e1551909634542-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4976-e1551909634542-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4976-e1551909634542-310x413.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rusted and old equipment in a lab at Hunter North.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHunter\u2019s ability to remain competitive is jeopardized by the severe inadequacy of the North Building on 68th Street, which currently houses Hunter\u2019s science programs and is one of the oldest structures in the CUNY system,\u201d says Hunter College\u2019s website, \u201cThe Brookdale Campus currently housing Nursing and P.T. has inadequate space and infrastructure for its highly-valued programs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many students feel the infrastructure is deteriorating and being one of the oldest structures has its difficulties.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe labs in Brookdale are pretty bad,\u201d said Josh Almiron, 22, a research student who has taken some of his lab classes in the Brookdale building. \u201cThe floor is made of wood and it looks like it\u2019s about to break any second.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Most students in these science programs have to split their classes between the main campus and Brookdale, which means they are often commuting back and forth during one day. The Brookdale campus requires a student to take the 6 train for six stops and then walk 14 minutes, according to Google maps. The entire ride takes about a half hour.
