Damiano David<\/a>\u2019s new single, Born With A Broken Heart<\/i><\/a>, comes as his band enters an extended hiatus. After M\u00e5neskin<\/a>\u2019s long tour seasons and skyrocketing international acclaim fueled by their 2021 Eurovision victory, they had been touring the world nearly constantly. Selling out venues like Madison Square Garden takes a toll.<\/p>\n

David has said on the Italian talk show, Che Tempo Che Fa<\/a>, that M\u00e5neskin isn\u2019t breaking up, though, and that his singles are some of the products of his Erasmus project. (For us Americans, an Erasmus is a gap year.) He has wanted to work on something individually for some time, expressing excitement for his new music.<\/p>\n

His first single, Silverlines<\/i><\/a>, which came out Sept. 27, is more soulful than David\u2019s work with M\u00e5neskin. This work was a collaboration with the producer and songwriter Labyrinth, and it shows. Labyrinth<\/a> is known for songs such as Mount Everest<\/i><\/a>.<\/i> David\u2019s first single with Labyrinth is spacious, ethereal, and thoughtful while also having a sense of recounting joyfulness.<\/p>\n

His new single is a direct juxtaposition both in lyrical content and in vibes to Silverlines<\/i>, demonstrating a jovial and upbeat sound that is reminiscent of Conan Gray<\/a> songs like Maniac<\/i><\/a> or Disaster<\/i><\/a> with a very Damiano twist. The lyrics represent a more mournful outlook on love, saying things like \u201cDon’t wanna see you cryin’, but I just know who I am; And, baby, that’s the hardest part of\u2014Baby, you can’t fix me I was born with a broken heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

David mentions that the song enumerates his feelings of emptiness and numbness at the time in a more joyous light compared to Silverlines<\/i>. This has been his theme for the beginning of his solo career. \u201cWe all have the ability to transform negative experiences into something meaningful for us,\u201d he\u2019d say to Clash<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The pop sensibilities of the song are in part due to the co-writers. One writer, Jason Evigan<\/a>, wrote songs such as Girls Like You<\/i> by Maroon 5<\/a> and Physical <\/i>by Dua Lipa<\/a>. The other, Mark Schnick<\/a>, has worked on music like Cold Heart (PNAU Remix) <\/i>by Elton John and Dua Lipa<\/a> and Bad Omens<\/i> by 5 Seconds of Summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For those who know David as the frontman for M\u00e5neskin, they should throw that idea to the side before listening to these songs. Born With A Broken Heart<\/i> and Silverlines<\/i> are David\u2019s music. It reflects a side of him not seen in the band. According to Billboard<\/a>, \u201cDavid explain[ed] that part of the reason he had not yet shared this more personal side of him in M\u00e5neskin was because he wanted to respect the band\u2019s strong identity \u2014 which he credits as part of its success \u2014 and also the \u201crole that was assigned to him,\u201d but it wasn\u2019t showing him as a whole person.<\/p>\n

Born With A Broken Heart<\/i> is a wonderful and fun track that is bound to make you bop your head and sing along. Silverlines<\/i> is also a soulful cathartic must-listen-to.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

Are they broken up? Why did he remove M\u00e5neskin from his bio? So many questions arose when the band\u2019s frontman, Damiano David, announced his first solo, Silverlines.
