And yet, they have learned to combat those feelings and push forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBurnout\u201d i<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s a phenomenon resulting from chronic stress that has not been adequately managed, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/28-05-2019-burn-out-an-occupational-phenomenon-international-classification-of-diseases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The syndrome&#8217;s characteristics include exhaustion, reduced efficiency, and mental discontent. Like many other phenomena rooted in mental health, there is no universal treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor me, I have to make time for myself and my personal interests outside of academics or I\u2019ll lose it,\u201d said senior Sociology major Emily Chan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acha.org\/documents\/ncha\/NCHA-II_FALL_2017_REFERENCE_GROUP_EXECUTIVE_SUMMARY.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National College Health Assessment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 80% of college students noted feeling overwhelmed, and 40% reported it was difficult to function.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chan said her preferred method of stress relief is crocheting, \u201cas it gives me something inane to focus on and take my eyes off of screens for a while.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6336\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6336\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3-300x259.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3-300x259.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3-1024x883.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3-768x662.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3-310x267.jpg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/IMG_F199794EC214-1_3.jpg 1179w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo supplied by Emily Chan: Stuffed animals crocheted by Emily Chan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making time for one\u2019s hobbies outside of work and school is highly recommended, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/adult-health\/in-depth\/burnout\/art-20046642\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This bypasses and treats burnout and can help with stress management.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHonestly, I just got into it because I needed something to do with my free time that wasn\u2019t just thinking about all the things I should be stressing about,\u201d said Chan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senior Biology major Anna Boers said she tries not to leave school work until the last minute, even though sometimes it is unavoidable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s just that everything can get really overwhelming toward the end of the semester so I try to be proactive about it,\u201d said Boers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boers also said that as the end of the semester approaches, she does her best to make time to see her friends especially as the weather gets better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m an extrovert so I just thrive off of other people\u2019s presences so I make it a priority to make time for others, especially as the weather gets better,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a student on the Pre-Med track, many of Boers\u2019 friends are also studying something in the science field<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which she considers a positive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019re able to understand me in a way people who aren\u2019t pursuing similar things don\u2019t, so their support and encouragement really keeps me pushing even if I start to feel burnt out,\u201d said Boers. \u201cIt\u2019s so much easier getting through it when you feel like it\u2019s not just you going through those feelings alone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chan shared similar sentiments about having a support team around her and emphasized the importance of having a life outside of work and academics. \u201cDon\u2019t become a shell of yourself,\u201d she said. \u201cIt can be difficult to make time for yourself when things get hectic, but you have to prioritize your wellbeing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macaulay Honors advisor Joanna Kata said that if a student came to her about burnout, she would recommend them to Hunter\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hunter.cuny.edu\/students\/health-wellness\/counseling-and-wellness-services\/counseling-services\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellness Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also recommends that students take advantage of the stress relief programs hosted by Undergraduate Student Government, the Wellness Center, and the Macaulay Honors Program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kata also said that it\u2019s important to maintain a schedule during hectic times to ensure students can get what they need done without overwhelming themselves.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlso, talking to friends and family can be so helpful,\u201d said Kata. \u201cSometimes just talking things through can help students from spiraling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; After working hard throughout the spring semester, many Hunter College students can feel burnt out when finals start.
