One of the machines is dedicated to refrigerated items, and the other has shelf-stable items. A refrigerated item, like a bag of produce, might be worth five points, while a shelf-stable item, like a bag of PopCorners, might be worth two points.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe really wanted to distinguish between the other vending machines that might exist on a campus or any place really,\u201d said Annette Nielsen, the executive director of the NYC Food Policy Program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The East Harlem campus is about 20 minutes away on the subway from Hunter\u2019s main campus on 68th Street. There were already food pantries at the 68th Street campus and the Brookdale campus. Before the installation, the students in East Harlem had limited access to affordable food on campus since there was no pantry or cafeteria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6258\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 1510px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6258 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry.png 1500w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry-310x233.png 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/refrigerated-pantry-60x45.png 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1500px) 100vw, 1500px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The refrigerated pantry contains bags of fresh produce and dishes like wraps and rice bowls.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The food pantries were created as \u201ca way to address food insecurity on the campus,\u201d said Nielsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food insecurity has been on the rise throughout the country with an overall 31%, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/topics\/food-nutrition-assistance\/food-security-in-the-u-s\/key-statistics-graphics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And about 1.2 million New Yorkers are food insecure, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/data\/emergency-food-in-nyc\/#:~:text=Food%20Insecurity,-Nationally%2C%20according%20to&amp;text=According%20to%20the%20NYC%20Mayor's,and%20Staten%20Island%20at%2010.1%25.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Mayor\u2019s Office of Food Policy. The rates of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/student-success\/health-wellness\/2023\/12\/11\/five-factors-causing-food-insecurity-among-college#:~:text=Students%20experience%20food%20insecurity%20at,risk%20factors%20for%20food%20insecurity.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food insecurity among students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are even higher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t focus when you\u2019re hungry,\u201d said Nielsen about how food insecurity affects students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The machines are thought to be cheaper to maintain than a traditional brick-and-mortar pantry since paid employees aren\u2019t necessary. The pantries are also available more often since they can be accessed whenever the campus is open instead of during set hours. But one downside is that the machines can have technical issues that take a while to resolve, said Nielsen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nielsen said the food i<\/span>n the pantries was chosen to be fresh, local and nutritious. Every Tuesday morning, they receive produce from New York-based farmers to be packaged and placed in the pantries. They also receive prepared dishes like salads and wraps from a local company called E.Terra Kitchen and soup made from surplus produce from a women-owned company called Matriark Foods.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6260\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"max-width: 1210px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6260 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry.png 1200w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry-225x300.png 225w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry-768x1024.png 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry-1152x1536.png 1152w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/shelf-stable-pantry-310x413.png 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The shelf stable pantry has dishes like kidney beans and Matriark&#8217;s vegetable stew and snacks like pretzels and fruit leathers.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nielsen chooses local and minority-owned food providers to reduce pollution caused by transportation and invest in marginalized groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we order through Grow NYC, \u2026 we can identify those farmers and producers that are BIPOC or women-owned, which is also very important because it strengthens our food system in different ways,\u201d said Nielsen, referring to the food, greenmarket, and environmental nonprofit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said the idea for the food pantry came about during the pandemic and was inspired by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycfoodpolicy.org\/coronavirus-nyc-food-reports\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYC Neighborhood Food Resource Guides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the program developed and maintains. The directory shows food pantries, bodegas, farmers&#8217; markets, and where you go to sign up for SNAP and WIC in the 59 city community districts. It\u2019s also regularly verified and updated by interns who work for the food policy center.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guide is the only place in New York City where you can find all this information and be pretty confident that it is good to go, according to Nielsen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The food policy center offers many other resources for students, like free cooking classes and an herb gardening event.
