Furthermore, many CUNY buildings need a thorough revamp, as only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuny.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/page-assets\/about\/trustees\/meetings-of-the-board\/CAL121823.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eight percent of CUNY buildings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are labeled to be in a \u201cstate of\u00a0 good repair.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As these budget cuts roll in, paired with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/newyork\/2023\/10\/3\/23902317\/cuny-enrollment-shift-college-attendance-tuition\/#:~:text=dropping%2017%25%20from%20roughly%20271%2C000%20in%202019%2D20%20to%20about%20226%2C000%20last%20school%20year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17 percent decrease in enrollment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, NYPIRG sprang into action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYPIRG, alongside other groups like the Professional Staff Congress (PSC), traveled to Albany on Feb. 28 for Higher Education Action Day. The annual event is targeted at pushing greater funding for higher education to the state\u2019s fiscal year budget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group\u2019s attendance at Higher Education Action Day is a culmination of a much larger effort by the student group throughout the year. Advocating for student voices, the group has helped organize a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypirgstudents.org\/storybank\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher Education Storybank<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d which features both CUNY and State University of New York students\u2019 personal anecdotes on how funding has allowed them to fulfill their goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Higher Education Issue Coordinator Ayesha Schmitt, action days like these are what keep younger adults involved in a field dominated by older adults\u2013 the average age of an American senator is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quorum.us\/data-driven-insights\/age-of-congress\/#:~:text=Ages%20of%20the%20Senate,54%20senators%20older%20than%2065.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">64 years old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re here to educate students who have a budding interest in politics,\u201d Schmitt said. \u201c We campaign for issues with politicians ,regardless of political affiliation, helping students get involved in local government where they have the most influence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its inception in 1973, NYPIRG has served as a statewide not-for-profit and non-partisan student-led group, advocating for various social justice issues. On March 9, Coordinator Schmitt and her team of students went to NYPIRG\u2019s Student Empowerment Conference, where they attended workshops and discussions on grassroots organizing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back at Hunter, in recognition of Women\u2019s History Month, NYPIRG is working on their hygiene product drive, where they collect menstrual products from college students to be donated to homeless shelters. To celebrate the end of the drive and educate students on the importance of access to hygiene products, NYPIRG will be hosting an event on April 2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These exact opportunities are what motivated Political Science Professor Carolyn Somerville to take on the role as the NYPIRG faculty internship supervisor.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTo me, internships are foreign languages, they enhance our life,\u201d Dr. Somerville said. \u201cIt [NYPIRG] elevates students&#8217; learning, their recognition of important issues, and increases student activism which they can take into the workplace after they leave Hunter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On campus, NYPIRG interns float around campus educating their peers in both the classroom and the sky bridge on the importance of issues, like voting and climate change, and encouraging their peers to sign up to vote, guiding them through the process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking with students and collecting signatures for their petitions, the group has developed a list of demands and a petition <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> state government for a new student budget, which includes an overhaul of the Tuition Assistance Program, amongst other things.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPersonally, I find NYPIRG an important resource on campus,\u201d says Umida Ubay, a Biology major at Hunter College. \u201cI find myself confused on CUNY related news, and I find their presentations in my classes to be helpful [to] understanding what\u2019s happening with funding.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who are interested in getting involved are invited to attend NYPIRG\u2019s weekly chapter meetings on Tuesdays at 2:30pm at TH115, and can do so by RSVPing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSfqFVA9Uhlxf26VGyb-jplsrtPh4kSNIQ0XLJQ6-zuJgV6v1A\/viewform\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student\u2019s names and posters can be seen all around the NYPIRG office, located at Thomas Hunter 115.
