For almost half of CUNY students coming from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2020\/06\/17\/new-study-confirms-cunys-power-as-national-engine-of-economic-mobility\/#:~:text=Almost%20half%20of%20CUNY%E2%80%99s%20students%20come%20from%20households%20earning%20less%20than%20%2420%2C000.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">households earning less than $20,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this reality is all too familiar.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it\u2019s only going to get more stressful with the Department of Education\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/us-department-education-announces-more-31-million-fafsa-forms-successfully-submitted-and-update-student-aid-index-calculation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announcement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Jan. 30 that all colleges will receive students\u2019 Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA information in mid-March, otherwise known as the FAFSA. As a result, colleges expect to release their financial aid decisions by mid-April, with most commitment dates falling on May 1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The delays are caused by the transition to the new application form developed following the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/help-center\/answers\/article\/fafsa-simplification-act\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FAFSA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Simplification Act passed by Congress in 2020. The new application form promised a streamlined application process with fewer questions, increased eligibility, and the ability to send information to more than 10 colleges as previously allowed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This isn\u2019t the first delay experienced by students in this new process. With all the changes, the form was made live to students on Dec. 30, a three-month delay. The form is usually accessible by October.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While other college systems, like the State University of New York (SUNY), have communicated with their students about the situation, Hunter has been quiet on the situation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fazrin Jahan, a senior at Hunter College majoring in biology, finds this especially troubling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a student that is reliant on federal aid, I am unsure why Hunter hasn\u2019t said anything yet on what they will do about the delay with receiving my FAFSA,\u201d she said. \u201cIt already takes a long time to hear back from the financial aid office.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The official website for CUNY&#8217;s Financial Aid Office does not offer any clarity. One sentence from the page reads: \u201cThe U.S. Department of Education recently announced\u00a0 that institutions will not receive 2024-2025 FAFSA applicant information until mid-March, which will delay CUNY\u2019s ability to provide students and their families with a timely financial aid offer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, with some searching, resources are available for students on the Hunter website. Rather than a lack of announcements, the issue may lie with the fact that communications are not broadly shared with students \u2013 unless they are looking for it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following suit with the SUNYs, CUNY <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2024\/02\/23\/cuny-extends-deadline-to-commit-to-college-to-june-1-giving-applicants-more-time-to-weigh-financial-aid\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">announced on February 23rd<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the commitment deadline would be pushed back a month to June 1st to accommodate the fact that almost 75% of CUNY undergraduates receive financial aid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many higher education <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/education\/2024\/02\/12\/fafsa-rollout-delays-student-colleges-impact\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say that the delays mean that students can\u2019t completely commit to their education, specifically those who identify as BIPOC and come from low-income backgrounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For colleges like Hunter, where almost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholarships360.org\/colleges\/new-york\/cuny-hunter-college\/affordability\/#:~:text=59%25%20of%20students%20at%20CUNY,professional%20degree%20are%20not%20eligible).\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60% of its student body<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> receives Federal Pell Grants, this news is especially troubling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-5714 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM-300x139.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM-300x139.png 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM-1024x475.png 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM-768x356.png 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM-310x144.png 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screen-Shot-2024-03-02-at-2.59.42-PM.png 1130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 589px) 100vw, 589px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter has information posted for students about the new FAFSA on their website.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there is some hope for students. Interim Admissions Director Joseph Fantozzi shared some insight on updated resources available for students, which include virtual and in-person financial aid workshops, an updated Navigate financial aid reminder system, and an expansion of the financial aid office to lighten the caseload.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While students are waiting, they should do three things, Director Fantozzi said. Attend one of the financial aid workshops, ask questions to the financial aid office, and use the net price calculator to estimate the cost of attendance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The next financial aid workshop is Wednesday, March 13 at 1:00-3:00pm via Zoom.
