(Photo Credit: Hunter College)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from being the center\u2019s director, Mayo-Adam, also an author of several books including the 2020 \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queer Alliances: How Power Shapes Political Movement Formation,\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teaches an undergraduate course called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu\/p-cubed\/curriculum-and-courses\/spring-2024-courses-public-policy-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ Policy and Politics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has does not have any formal prerequisites (though Mayo-Adams suggests students should take English 120 before taking this course).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The course discusses the development of LGBTQ policy in America, trailing the extensive history of activism in the U.S. and transformative lawsuits that have shaped modern-day queer rights.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from classes, the center hosts several events per semester, such as an upcoming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.roosevelthouse.hunter.cuny.edu\/events\/banned-books-censorship-free-expression-lgbtq-identity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feb. 28 panel discussion on the censorship of LGBTQ+ identity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through the banning of books, which Mayo-Adams is moderating. The panelists include best-selling authors whose books have been subject to such bans due to their inclusion of LGBTQ themes, such as Adriana Herrera, Vicki Johnson, Kyle Lukoff and Boon Lin Ngeo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Craig Seligman \u2014 Who Does That Bitch Think She Is? Writer Craig Seligman came to discuss his new book &#8220;Who Does That Bitch Think She Is? Doris Fish and the Rise of Drag&#8221; in conversation with local drag artist John Epperson aka Lypsinka.<\/em><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former student and current Roosevelt House faculty member Annabella Pritchard cites her work with the LGBTQ Policy Center as one of their \u201cgreatest privileges to help create a space,\u201d\u00a0 where queer students, politicians and activists can come together to discuss how to fight against \u201cour current landscape of discriminatory politics that continues to affect the lives of trans and queer children and adults every day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe center is a place where these conversations can be had with generations of LGBTQ movement leaders, and queer student voices can be fostered into the next generation as queer activists,\u201d said Pritchard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the center&#8217;s most lucrative opportunities this year for students is their Pride Policy fellowship. Students who are selected as fellows will either pursue an academic research project or internship that addresses LGBTQ issues or policies, and receive a $5000 stipend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The center is currently accepting applications for their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/12911647037ef6d548c5a94d8\/files\/e295b12f-ef00-175c-05dd-7103048a2e56\/PridePolicyFellowship_Spring2024.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024-2025 cohort, due May 1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Senior Nicole Palmetto, a fellow from last year, said the stipend allowed her to intern at Senator Brad<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoylman-Sigal&#8217;s office, which she wouldn\u2019t have been able to do because of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">her financial situation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her time, she worked on legislation \u201cthat affects queer lives like mine,\u201d and praised the experience as one that allowed her to strengthen her passion for public service and develop skills such as policy analysis, constituent engagement and legislative advocacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe invaluable experiences gained during my time shaped my perspective and dedication to advancing inclusive policies for marginalized communities,\u201d said\u00a0 Palmetto. \u201cWithout the LGBTQ Policy Center, I would not have had the opportunity for such transformative growth in my professional and personal journey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At Hunter College, queer students can find academic representation in the expanding opportunities and resources available at the LGBTQ Policy Center.
