It is pricey, lacks options, and doesn\u2019t accommodate students&#8217; needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter College is as diverse as the city of New York, with 73 percent of the students being people of color, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.collegesimply.com\/colleges\/new-york\/cuny-hunter-college\/students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> collegesimply.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This website uses a ranking system based on U.S. Department of Education data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter was designated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hunterprojectfresh.org\/Hunter-as-an-hsi\">Hispanic-Serving Institution<\/a> in 2019 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and has been an<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/huntercap.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2016. Such a diverse student body comes with numerous dietary restrictions, food needs, health matters, allergies, and religious beliefs that still need to be met.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cAs a vegan with myriad allergies, the cafeteria gets on my nerves. Occasionally, there is vegetarian pasta, and most days, it is pointless even to step in,\u201d said Yashika Parwath, a senior who struggles to find a nutritious meal that doesn\u2019t break the bank but also accommodates her numerous food allergies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cafeteria at Hunter doesn\u2019t offer an array of choices; on occasions, there are none for vegans or vegetarians. Halal and Kosher foods are not part of the menu. A few food trucks near campus are halal-certified to grab a meal or a snack. Even non-halal students resort to these trucks for their meals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to add a lot more options in that regard. We just started back last semester, so we are looking into more options,\u201d said Stephanie Bustamante, the cafeteria\u2019s manager. \u201cWe wanted to get a sushi station; we are just trying to find the right vendors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No lactose or gluten substitutes exist for students who present these needs or any other restrictions. They have implemented garden salads with animal protein and egg salad as well. Bustamante said they \u201cfly off the shelves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The menu has few variations, and the homemade meals have a heavy Hispanic influence; as Bustamante points out, the kitchen staff came from a small Dominican restaurant and brought their culinary knowledge to The Hungry Hawk Caf\u00e9.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5353\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5353 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/foodcafeteria--300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/foodcafeteria--300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/foodcafeteria--310x233.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/foodcafeteria--60x45.jpeg 60w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/foodcafeteria-.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Hungry Hawk Caf\u00e9 home-cooked meal offerings on September 14 include one chicken option, two beef, and one pork.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe food here at Hunter doesn\u2019t vary much on the menu; it feels like I\u2019m still in high school where they sell the same food to gain profit,\u201d said sophomore Brianna Rivas.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2017<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/projects\/college-mobility\/hunter-college#:~:text=The%20median%20family%20income%20of,from%20the%20top%2020%20percent.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New York Times report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Hunter student&#8217;s average median household income is $57,500. Yet, students get charged $2.99 plus tax for a plain slice and $8.99 plus tax for a bowl of pasta with protein. Three out of five students interviewed for this piece say the cafeteria prices are high for a public college, and the food\u2019s quality and options don\u2019t match the price point.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students are unaware that the college cafeteria has been outsourced to a food catering company called Eatily Foods through a partnership that began when the cafeteria reopened after the pandemic. \u201cGiven it is internal to the college, the cafe is supposed to be pocket-friendly, saving students time and money,\u201d said Parwath.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEtalily Foods&#8217; idea is to provide students with a home-cooked meal and make the cafeteria feel like a home away from home,\u201d said Bustamante in an interview conducted by Hunter News Now in 2022. Not all students find their meals comforting. Hunter doesn\u2019t have a cafeteria that matches the inclusivity its statistics show, but s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tudents expect Hunter to be inclusive in all areas. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe upper management at Hunter does not seem to make the third-floor dining experience any more of a priority than they have to,\u201d said senior Veronica Bar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cafeteria at Hunter College doesn\u2019t match the multiculturalism the school holds.
