While the struggle of finding a job has been difficult, her worry about food is lessened thanks to the college.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Hunter\u2019s food pantry has been a big help to me, since not working and not having any money,\u201d she said. \u201cI don&#8217;t have to stress as much about what to eat or if what I eat is healthy.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With just a Hunter College ID card in hand, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hunter.cuny.edu\/students\/health-wellness\/emergency-support-resources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Purple Apron Food Pantry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives students food every weekday. It is open Monday to Thursday at the 68th st. campus and on Fridays at the Brookdale campus. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grownyc.org\/foodbox\/hunter-college-68th\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter\u2019s Fresh Food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> box offers a bag of organic ingredients on Thursdays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the East building&#8217;s basement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe goal of the food pantries program is to support the health and well-being of our students by helping them alleviate food insecurity issues,\u201d said a Hunter spokesperson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter&#8217;s food policy center is a resource for students who cannot afford healthy and nutritional meals. According to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/572d0fcc2b8dde9e10ab59d4\/t\/5bb289050d92976e2ee79eca\/1538427146487\/SPH_Ending_Food_Insecurity_CUNY_Final3.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Urban Food Policy Institute, 60,000 CUNY undergraduates experience food insecurity. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentsagainsthunger.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Hunger_On_Campus.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> show food-insecure students are more likely to have their GPA drop, leading to heightened stress levels and depression.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 80 bags a week are handed out to students and staff, said GrowNYC\u2019s Emilia Jenson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHaving access to fresh, good organic produce helps students have a healthy good balanced diet,\u201d she said. Seventy bags go to Hunter students who signed up for the program. The rest are available for purchase for $14; for those on federal assistance the price is $7.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who cannot afford to cover the cost of the Hunter Fresh Food Box, there is also a Voucher Program that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> covers the cost of the fresh food box. Students can<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sign up for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ww3.hunter.cuny.edu\/studentaffairs\/view.php?id=78591\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">waitlist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be given a fresh food bag at no cost to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFood insecurity is a significant challenge faced by college students,\u201d said Martin Pino, director of Counseling and Wellness Services at Hunter. Findings from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/572d0fcc2b8dde9e10ab59d4\/t\/5ee2711f44361d4425414a3d\/1591898403740\/CUNY-UFPI_food-security_v07_Final.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">State of Food Security at CUNY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> indicate that \u201c8% of students had gone hungry due to lack of access often (5%) or sometimes (13%) in the last 2 weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hope4college.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/RCReport2021.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hope Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which surveyed 195,000 students in over 200 colleges nationwide, 29% of students were affected by food insecurity in 2020.
