The event, moderated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The City<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journalist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecity.nyc\/authors\/rachel-holliday\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rachel Holliday Smith<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, gave students the opportunity to pose their most pressing issues during what will be a key election for their borough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyrus Vance Jr., the current DA, announced he is not seeking re-election earlier this month, leaving the position open for the first time in 12 years. The next DA will be crucial in shaping criminal justice and the future of the borough, home to students at Hunter\u2019s four resident halls and a second home for others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt will undoubtedly have an effect on each of us,\u201d President Jennifer Raab told 200 audience members, kicking off the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All candidates are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/25\/nyregion\/manhattan-district-attorney-election.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatively unknown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> progressives with some, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tahanieforda.com\/vision\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tahanie Aboushi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elizaorlins.com\/issues\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliza Orlin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.votelucylang.com\/en\/plans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucy Lang<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prioritizing systemic change, like decriminalizing sex work, more than others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The remaining five candidates, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lizcrotty2021.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Crotty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alvinbragg.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alvin Bragg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dianaforda.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diana Florence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.googleadservices.com\/pagead\/aclk?sa=L&amp;ai=DChcSEwjU8MzCptPwAhVpOLMAHQpoBhYYABAAGgJ5bQ&amp;ae=2&amp;ohost=www.google.com&amp;cid=CAESPuD2ONmX5_cRUO1NfeTRgHGYZN4FD2ecRzErEqYMxuPlv_MW0-UC8nlXvOPy5qsR2cLNsorrP7xbeWMwFTUC&amp;sig=AOD64_0Olpb5m_IWp01bSkx2Q4F3-TRwuw&amp;q&amp;adurl&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjwvsTCptPwAhXNTDABHdjNDoYQ0Qx6BAgCEAE&amp;dct=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Quart <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.taliforda.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tali Farhadian Weinstein<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> largely agree with their competitors, like on ending mass incarceration, but call for less radical change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For over two hours, the candidates took questions from Hunter students and the audience. Mental health, policy change and allocations of funds were common themes. Attendees didn\u2019t shy away from asking hard-hitting questions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWill you disband the special narcotics prosecutor,\u201d asked student Emanuel Zbeda, a key issue that many candidates disagree on. Crotty and Lang agreed that it needed to be revamped, but not disbanded while Orlins said abolishing it completely is a priority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Another wanted to know how the next DA will use the accumulated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.new-york-lawyers.org\/new-york-state-asset-forfeiture.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asset forfeiture funds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A third student asked how each candidate would handle a case as high profile as Donald Trump\u2019s current investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3941 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-300x188.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"643\" height=\"403\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-1024x640.png 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-768x480.png 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-1536x960.png 1536w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-2048x1280.png 2048w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/chantal-310x194.png 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 643px) 100vw, 643px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhy are you qualified to be a Manhattan district attorney at a time when law enforcement officials are being called on more than ever to balance public safety with equity and respect,\u201d asked\u00a0 McCauley Honors student Chantal Polinsky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some candidates who were born and raised in New York, like Bragg and Crotty, the answer came naturally.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI understand what the nuance is of being in New York and how there are some unspoken things about how we all live here,\u201d said Crotty, who was a criminal justice lawyer upon joining the DA\u2019s office in 2000.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bragg echoed the sentiment, sharing that he grew up in Harlem and was held at gun-point six times; three of those times were by cops, according to Bragg. He has worked in the courtroom for two decades and most recently served as chief deputy attorney general in New York state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For other candidates, like Orlins and Florence, hands-on experience with those they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represent is the most important qualification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s really important that you do work in the trenches,\u201d said Florence. \u201cAnd I didn\u2019t just do it the same old way, processing people like a justice factory. I worked not for, but alongside the people I was serving,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lang cited a similar experience during a case representing a mother whose son died from gun violence. \u201cIt is that kind of deep engagement with communities most affected that is going to put the district attorney\u2019s office on the right track,\u201d said Lang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Orlins, who even warned audience members that her competitor, Farhadian Weinstein was a \u201cdangerous candidate,\u201d has been a public defender for over a decade and has represented over 3,000 New Yorkers. Farhadian Weinstein left prior to this and did not have the opportunity to respond as each candidate spoke in a predetermined order.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farhadian Weinstein and Aboushi cited their firsthand experience as minorities who faced systemic injustice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt 14-years-old, when my father was sentenced to 22 years in prison,\u201d said Aboushi, who has notoriously fought for minority rights as an attorney. \u201cIt\u2019s why I became a civil rights lawyer, to battle some of the worst abuses of our systems,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farhadian Weinstein, who came to America from Iran as a child, stressed the importance of people feeling safe and having opportunities. \u201cI know how important it is to have these institutions that create pathways for people to succeed and to thrive.\u201d She has served at the U.S. Department of Justice and as an Assistant U.S. Attorney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Aboushi, Assembly Member Quart mentioned his extensive experience working in legislature and the court as to why voters should trust him. He has served representing Manhattan\u2019s East Side and as an attorney.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Candidates were not given the opportunity for final statements in the interest of time.
