{"id":3903,"date":"2021-05-19T10:01:56","date_gmt":"2021-05-19T14:01:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/?p=3903"},"modified":"2021-05-21T08:08:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T12:08:03","slug":"mental-health-app-launches-at-hunter-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/2021\/05\/mental-health-app-launches-at-hunter-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health App Launches at Hunter College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Freshman Avi Mikhaylov launched the Hunter College chapter of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unmaskedproject.com\/about-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unmasked Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a national movement and app across many college campuses, in March. Originally started at Dartmouth College, the app is run entirely by students and acts as an outlet to vent mental health frustrations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3908 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/aviheadshot-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"189\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/aviheadshot-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/aviheadshot-768x864.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/aviheadshot-310x349.jpg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/aviheadshot.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 189px) 100vw, 189px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2013\/06\/college-students\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> study found that about 42% of college students struggle with anxiety and 36% with depression. For many of these struggling students, time and money might be reasons t<\/span>herapy isn\u2019t always an option.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHunter is a commuter school and it can be hard to create a community that supports each other,\u201d said Mikhaylov.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are currently about 90 active users on the app and eight trained moderators. The app\u2019s main feed is for anonymous messages from students on academic struggles, mental health milestones and other positive affirmations. A few weeks after launch, the official <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CM4yK59A7Lz\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unmasked Instagram<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> page posted a thread about academic pressure by a Hunter student.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some messages, moderators add trigger warnings to ensure the app remains a safe and productive space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3907 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/unmaskedrepost-167x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/unmaskedrepost-167x300.jpg 167w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/unmaskedrepost-310x558.jpg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/unmaskedrepost.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To sign up, students use their official Hunter email address. Once verified, they can start using the app. Similar to other chat room forums, anyone can reply to a post and the newest messages appear at the top.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After a 90-minute training paid for by Unmasked, moderators learn how to identify a mental health crisis that needs professional attention, what requires a trigger warning and how to respond directly to users in an appropriate way.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe training makes you realize you\u2019re not a mental health professional and you can\u2019t give advice in that way,\u201d said psychology major and moderator Aysha Khan. \u201cYou just need to be human and empathetic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Khan, other psychology majors expressed interest in the app as a means of kickstarting their field work. Professors in the psychology department at Hunter reached out to Mikhaylov on behalf of students wanting to be moderators. Instead of going outside of Hunter for opportunities, they\u2019ll be using their skills to help their fellow peers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides the app being a place to connect, students also receive contact information for mental health resources at Hunter and in their area. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hunter.cuny.edu\/cws\/counselingservices\/welcome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter counseling services<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launched two new support groups, Inequality and Injustice: Connecting Through Conversation and Processing the Pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Unmasked, the drop-in groups create a virtual space for students to connect with one another. These groups were created in direct response to a reported increase in Hunter students experiencing anxiety, feelings of isolation and grief, said director of counseling and wellness services Martin Pino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCWS will continue to offer virtual counseling and workshops to ensure that all Hunter students have access to mental health support when they need it,\u201d Pino said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What sets Unmasked apart from other mental health initiatives is the anonymity. The students\u2019 and moderators\u2019 names are not listed and their icons automatically change every time a message is sent. The students remaining nameless doesn\u2019t stop them from connecting and finding community. It actually allows for them to be unscripted and completely themselves, according to freshman moderator Laila Gad.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI messaged a person after she posted about the music she liked and now we\u2019re friends,\u201d Gad said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more students expressing interest in both using and helping to run the app, Hunter Unmasked plans to expand. Mikhaylov, the founder, and the moderators are working directly with Unmasked Project representatives to bring the app to other CUNY campuses. This summer, the Hunter chapter will aid in other colleges&#8217; launches for the fall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re thinking of also doing a CUNY-wide Unmasked page,\u201d said Mikhaylov. \u201cEven though, for example, Hunter and Baruch are different colleges, we\u2019re still a part of the same system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for Hunter specifically, the group of moderators will be recognized as an official Hunter club at the beginning of the fall 2021 semester. The group hopes to have regular, possibly in person, meetings open to the entire college. The meetings will center conversations on mental health and first aid training.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter how much the app changes, the team\u2019s goals of connection and destigmatizing mental health are always at the forefront.
