For the month of March alone, there were 309 complaints for offenses in transit and bus, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/nypd\/stats\/reports-analysis\/transit-bus.page\">NYPD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Transit President Sarah Feinberg pleaded with Mayor Bill de Blasio for weeks to position more cops on trains. \u201cI believe that the best way to ensure the safety of our customers and employees is to take a preventive approach, which places an emphasis on police presence,\u201d said Feinberg, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/newyork.cbslocal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14578484\/2021\/01\/0216_001.pdf\">letter<\/a> to the 109th mayor.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3847\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3847\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/MTA-Cops-Put-Person-in-Handcuffs-300x179.jpeg\" alt=\"MTA Cops Put Person in Handcuffs\" width=\"300\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/MTA-Cops-Put-Person-in-Handcuffs-300x179.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/MTA-Cops-Put-Person-in-Handcuffs-310x185.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/MTA-Cops-Put-Person-in-Handcuffs.jpeg 520w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by <a href=\"https:\/\/search.creativecommons.org\/photos\/bbc36965-6e9f-493d-b18d-91940d0cb07d\">Run With Scissors<\/a> for Creative Commons.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI feel safe in transit when there are definitely less cops, when it&#8217;s a little bit crowded but not too empty,\u201d said one computer science student from Queens College who was not comfortable with sharing his name. He describes his past experiences with police officers as nerve-wracking: \u201cCops actually called me over and had to check my bag, so I kind of got nervous when that happened, when I was like 15 years old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The spike in crime and gun-violence in the region in recent months has become a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/05\/11\/nyregion\/mayor-race-nyc-crime-police.html\">central theme<\/a> of the 2021 mayoral race.
