She broke ground on the show, leading the way for more trans representation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most recently, Gottmik, top four finalist on season 13, made history as the first trans man contestant on the show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Off the \u201cDrag Race\u201d stage, COVID-19 club closings rocketed virtual drag to prominence in the community through <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaldragfest.com\/#about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital Drag Fest <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaldrag.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital drag livestreams on Twitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crystal Queer Club\u2019s show approached virtual drag with a mix of live performances and pre-recorded videos introduced by queens.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In one of the most memorable performances of the evening, Queen<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/its.sherrypoppins\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sherry Poppins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> took the virtual stage and presented their sexy and sinister lip-sync of \u201cBlue Velvet\u201d by Bobby Vinton.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3830\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3830\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-300x199.png\" alt=\"Sherry Poppins lip-syncs to &quot;Blue Velvet:\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-1024x679.png 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-210x140.png 210w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2-310x206.png 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/drag2.png 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sherry Poppins performs &#8220;Blue Velvet&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poppins modeled the video after David Lynch\u2019s 1986 Neo-Noir \u201cBlue Velvet,\u201d about the dark underbelly of Suburbia. Bathed in blue light, Poppins weaved the song with bits of dialogue from Antagonist Frank Booth, who delivers speeches between violent inhales of gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poppins incorporated narrative into several of their videos, with heavy inspiration from unsolved mysteries and \u201cLaw &amp; Order\u201d binges. They performed a tale of infidelity and murder to Hannah Gill\u2019s Postmodern Jukebox cover of \u201cSomebody That I Used To Know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/boyishcharmnyc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boyish Charm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed suit with an unhinged performance of \u201cBlank Space\u201d by Taylor Swift, where she sought revenge against her cheating ginger lover.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3833\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/roqueroqueroque\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latinx Glamour Queen Roque\u0301<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> delivered sultry glam with a lip-sync to \u201cLa Luz\u201d by Kali Uchis and Jhay Cortez.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3829\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" gleeful showstoppers, the evening took a more serious tone as the panel on gender identity began.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The queens shared how drag brought them to a better understanding of their gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poppins used drag to play with gender expression, ultimately leading to their self-realization that they are nonbinary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Peppermint medically transitioned, drag allowed her to hide the physical changes of hormones, while she was becoming more comfortable with her body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Drag was the only place I could go and exude my femmeness and not be chastised for it, but lauded for it,\u201d said Peppermint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peppermint discussed the closeness of gender identity to the human spirit, and how drag provides a tool to subvert gender stereotypes, play with gender expression and educate others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople are more open when they are being entertained, you can sneak something in,\u201d said Peppermint, \u201cAnd you can teach them something.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The message of the night, delivered by the effervescent queens: every person should do drag at least
