routines <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changed suddenly and dramatically. \u201cBased on prior community crises, we can reasonably anticipate increases in anxiety, depression and trauma,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2020\/09\/safeguarding-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharon Hoover, PhD<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, co-director of the National Center for School Mental Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, said in a press release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still only about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2020\/09\/safeguarding-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20% receive any kind of care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from a mental health specialist according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support these students, CUNY partnered with a few mental health services, as a result of the $5 million expansion of CUNY funds supported by the CARES Act. It is designed to create a path for more students to receive face-to-face counseling, a Crisis Text line, and other remote wellness services such as teletherapy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first introduced is the 24\/7 crisis intervention organization <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.crisistextline.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crisis Text Line<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Any CUNY student struggling with psychological or emotional problems can text \u201cCUNY\u201d to 741741 for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2021\/02\/22\/cuny-introduces-services-to-bolster-student-mental-health-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free and confidential conversation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with trained volunteers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychology major Luisais Taveras had a unique experience with the existing counseling resources at Hunter. \u201cI always had anxiety going to therapy,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think Hunter needs to acknowledge that they do not have the necessary staff to cater to thousands of students that use their facilities,\u201d she said of the Health and Wellness Departments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taveras explained that when seeking therapy at Hunter<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one g<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ets 10 total sessions, one session a week for about 40 minutes to an hour. While they do offer additional support groups they cater more towards specific needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students can get a referral at the end of their sessions if they would like to continue their support, but students are deterred by this fact given that they would establish a connection with their therapist at Hunter, and did not want to start from scratch. Marianny said that she needed stability which kept her from seeking further resources.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the plan to increase mental health services to students, CUNY also acquired access to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.talkspace.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talkspace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a platform that allows out-of-state and international students to get teletherapy from licensed counselors via text or teleconference. This serves as a resource to out of state students given that CUNY mental health professionals are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2021\/02\/22\/cuny-introduces-services-to-bolster-student-mental-health-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restricted by law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from doing teletherapy across state lines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to keep up with the increasing demand of health professionals, there will now be 10-hour training courses to 120 campus clinical counselors that will lead to a certification in \u201ctelemental health,\u201d said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2021\/02\/22\/cuny-introduces-services-to-bolster-student-mental-health-during-covid-19-pandemic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUNY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on their website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The university will begin providing faculty and staff with access to an online training program called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kognito.com\/products\/at-risk-for-college-students\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kognito<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This entails a \u201csuite of real-time simulations aimed at helping them identify and respond to students in crisis,\u201d according to the CUNY website.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taveras still hopes to see on-campus learning again.
