{"id":3330,"date":"2020-12-08T14:35:08","date_gmt":"2020-12-08T19:35:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/?p=3330"},"modified":"2021-01-08T15:31:37","modified_gmt":"2021-01-08T20:31:37","slug":"food-insecurity-threatens-all-cuny-students-experts-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/2020\/12\/food-insecurity-threatens-all-cuny-students-experts-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Food Insecurity Threatens All CUNY Students, Experts Say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter College\u2019s on-campus Purple Apron food pantry shut its doors in March, exactly at when the need for emergency funding and food skyrocketed, said Director of Student Life Miesha Smith.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even before the pandemic, food insecurity was one of the most pressing issues faced by New Yorkers. Now, with school closures, unemployment and rising coronavirus cases, it has only become worse, according to panelists at \u201cFood Insecurity During the COVID-19 Pandemic.\u201d But at Hunter, with food pantry resources in flux, students might have a harder time getting food on their tables while learning off campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One panelist at the Roosevelt House event, Kate MacKenzie from the Mayor\u2019s Office of Food Policy, said her office\u2019s mission is for no New Yorker to experience hunger. Right now, 1 in 6 people in New York experience hunger and only 1 in 4 will turn to a food pantry. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityharvest.org\/food-insecurity\/#:~:text=Food%20insecurity%20is%20expected%20to,fall%20equally%20across%20the%20city.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data from City Harvest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that the number of New Yorkers struggling to feed themselves is up 38% compared to pre-COVID figures.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3332\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 410px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3332\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3389.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3389.jpg 750w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3389-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3389-310x196.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo courtesy of Hunter College<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even before the pandemic, 36,000 CUNY students were food insecure, according to research from panelist Vanessa Fuentes. A Hunter political science and public policy student, her senior thesis explores the link between CUNY students and food insecurity. Anyone without consistent and reliable access to an affordable and nutritious food supply can be considered food insecure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you don\u2019t have enough food to eat, you really can\u2019t concentrate on academics or work if you\u2019re working,\u201d Fuentes said. Along with academic performance, food insecurity can impact attendance in students. These issues are further amplified when there are other financial burdens, like rent, on top of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students struggling with food insecurity and hunger can find <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hunter.cuny.edu\/news\/fighting-hunger-and-food-insecurity-during-covid-19\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">resources online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the NYC Food Policy Center, as listed on Hunter\u2019s website. Still, Smith predicts that not nearly as many students in need are able to use this resource to feed themselves. Since the school\u2019s food pantry went mobile, she said that approximately 800 students have been using this resource to put food on their tables. Smith said that even though the mobile food pantry will be suspending its services in the winter, there are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.hunter.cuny.edu\/students\/student-life\/emergency-support-and-resources\/food-pantry-the-purple-apron\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hours available<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to visit the on campus food pantry that has recently reopened.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gothamist.com\/news\/cuny-grapples-with-devastating-budget-cuts-people-are-freaking-out-or-getting-fired\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">budget cuts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at CUNY, Smith said it is important for students and advocates to say that food security matters. Fuentes said that the university system needs to use more of its funding to help students impacted by this issue. Recently, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccny.cuny.edu\/news\/ccny-receives-west-harlem-development-grant-holiday-food-initiatives?utm_source=hootsuite&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_term=cuny&amp;utm_content=dd42b4b0-0b01-4ea1-8299-7eb7f7975854&amp;utm_campaign=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cunytuesday.org\/organizations\/borough-of-manhattan-community-college\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Borough of Manhattan Community College<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have received charitable donations for students and local communities in need of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meal delivery services and grab and go programs have been helpful for those in need since the start of the pandemic. But even after the coronavirus is under control, panelists hope to see these resources continue on.
