A frequent guest on his brother\u2019s, journalist Chris Cuomo, show, their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/sv8QVgCxa1M\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">witty tiffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have captured the attention of audiences across the nation. Last week, he took a gentler approach to the Fifth Estate.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talking about the journalists of his youth, including Jack Newfield and Wayne Barrett, he told a virtual audience, \u201cThey taught me that journalism at its best was about finding the truth, as hidden, difficult, complex, or uncomfortable as that truth may be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3131\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"max-width: 203px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3131\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barrett-193x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wayne Barrett's posthumously published book\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barrett-193x300.jpg 193w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Barrett.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 193px) 100vw, 193px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wayne Barrett&#8217;s posthumously published book.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuomo joined the panelists of the Roosevelt House\u2019s 2020 Jack Newfield Lecture in honoring the late Barrett, an investigative journalist who reported on New York\u2019s politicians starting in the early 70s. Barrett, who passed away in 2016 the night before President Trump\u2019s inauguration, began his work as a journalist writing freelance for The Village Voice. He eventually worked his way up to senior editor, reporting on corruption in local government during the Giuliani administration and the shady business ventures of then up-and-coming real estate developer Donald Trump.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The virtual event celebrated Barrett\u2019s posthumously published book, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hachettebookgroup.com\/titles\/wayne-barrett\/without-compromise\/9781645036531\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without Compromise: The Brave Journalism that First Exposed Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and the American Epidemic of Corruption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d A <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">panel of his friends and mentees<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflected on his contributions to journalism in New York and its relevance today. Barrett had also served as the inaugural professor of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Newfield Visiting Professorship of Journalism at Hunter College, a program named after investigative reporter and Hunter alum. During his time as a professor and mentor, Barrett taught his students about<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> journalism\u2019s primary role of seeking out the truth and holding those in positions of power accountable. Citing the current investigations being conducted against the president, she highlighted how much of the current reporting relies on Barrett\u2019s research into Trump from the 70s.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNews readers have a renewed respect and understanding that democracy really depends on serious journalism,\u201d said Markey. \u201cWe wanted them to be able to look at the original document which is really fitting, one of Barrett\u2019s famous reporting methods was to go get the documents.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fellow panelist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tom Robbins, an in-residence investigative journalist at the CUNY\u2019s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, agreed that it was Barrett\u2019s reporting methods that distinguished him. \u201cOne of Wayne\u2019s fairly unique approaches to his stories was that he believed in knocking on every door, often no matter what time of day it was,\u201d he said with a chuckle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the event wound down, the panelists reflected on journalism today and the downsizing of local newspapers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They stressed the ongoing need for investigative journalism and journalists unafraid of holding politicians accountable<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt needs a future, we need it, the society needs it, the population needs it, the voters need it,\u201d said Markey. She also emphasized that there is still important investigative journalism being done, citing the work that fellow panelist Andrea Bernstein has done as part of the WNYC\/ProPublica podcast \u201cTrump, Inc.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier in the panel, as Governor Cuomo wrapped up his opening remarks, he ended on a statement that captured the necessity for good journalism today. He said, \u201cWe miss him. We miss them.
