Stories ranged from students needing to jump turnstiles to get to class to having to choose between books over food.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In this year\u2019s executive budget request, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced yearly tuition hikes of $200 for the next five years and a flat operating budget despite the increase in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.cuny.edu\/mu\/forum\/2018\/10\/09\/cuny-freshman-enrollment-increases-4-0-percent-to-record-39938-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enrollment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and ailing<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/29\/nyregion\/dreams-stall-as-cuny-citys-engine-of-mobility-sputters.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infrastructure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the past years, tuition has gone up by $1600 which is about 40% of the current <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cuny.edu\/financial-aid\/tuition-and-college-costs\/tuition-fees\/#undergraduate-tuition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cost <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of tuition per semester<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CUNY and SUNY need $86 million dollars from the state budget to stop a tuition hike according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nypirgstudents.org\/pubs\/201910\/higher_ed_news_merged_10-22-19_FINAL.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Public Interest Research Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That\u2019s .0004% of the $178 billion New York State budget.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuition wasn\u2019t the only issue on the group\u2019s docket. University Student Senate (USS) President Timothy Hunter offered up his own story as an example to bring to their meetings. \u201cMy mom was a graduate of Medgar Evers College. When she was getting her undergraduate degree in 1993. She was having her classes not in classrooms but in trailers,\u201d said Hunter. \u201cThey called them portables. They said they\u2019d be temporary.\u201d Hunter took his specialized high school prep in those same trailers and classes are still being held in them today. Students and teachers were in 45 different offices throughout the day telling stories just like these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the end of the week&#8217;s legislative session and by the time the students had made it to elected officials\u2019 offices many elected officials were already headed back to their respective districts. The legislative assistant couldn\u2019t make any pledges on behalf of Senate Majority leader Cousins. The budget will be final on April 1, 2020 so there\u2019s still time to make changes. One student told her story about how she couldn\u2019t find any resources for her mental health. \u201cWhen I was a freshman in college I was sexually assaulted. I heard about counseling in the sociology department,\u201d said Judley Baltazard, a junior at City College. \u201cThe counseling was closed. I didn\u2019t get counseling and never got counseling. There are only two counselors in my whole school.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psc-cuny.org\/SMATKitFeb10\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ratio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of students to mental health counselors at CUNY is 1:2700. The International Accreditation of Counseling Services recommends a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iacsinc.org\/staff-to-student-ratios\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ratio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of which requires about double the counselors. State Senator Andrew Gounardes currently has a bill which would mandate the university to maintain that IASC ratio.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The teachers invoked some of the students that couldn\u2019t be in these meetings to advocate for themselves. \u201cOne of my students, Gina didn\u2019t show up for the first three classes,\u201d said an English professor from Medgar Evers. \u201cShe was in an opportunity program and they were late getting her metrocard and she couldn\u2019t afford the $2.75 to get to class. She turned out to be an A student by the end of the class.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student leaders made it clear that this won\u2019t be the last chance for students to advocate for higher education. \u201cRight now, as we sit here listening to elected officials promise us this and promise us that we need to make sure that today is not just the end of the movement, not the peak of the movement but the start of the movement,\u201d said USS President Hunter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USS is planning a CUNY-wide<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B810OgPlEWL\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">march<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the Brooklyn Bridge on March 15.
