{"id":2062,"date":"2019-11-14T03:29:04","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T03:29:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/?p=2062"},"modified":"2019-11-14T03:48:49","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T03:48:49","slug":"cuny-hunters-student-recital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/2019\/11\/cuny-hunters-student-recital\/","title":{"rendered":"CUNY Hunter\u2019s Student Recital"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this month on a Monday night, deep in the dimly lit Lang Music Hall, eight graduate and\u00a0<\/span>undergraduate students of Hunter College proved their talents, individually performing in front of an intimate audience of almost 15 people.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of their degree, the students practiced their performing skills in a public performance that featured work from Bach to Montes. \u201cIt\u2019s always good to iron out any kinks that you have before you have to perform where it really counts,\u201d says Olivia Graham, house manager and former student at Hunter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2063 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chloe-Castaldi-CUNY-Hunters-Student-Recital-198x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"198\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chloe-Castaldi-CUNY-Hunters-Student-Recital-198x300.jpeg 198w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chloe-Castaldi-CUNY-Hunters-Student-Recital-676x1024.jpeg 676w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chloe-Castaldi-CUNY-Hunters-Student-Recital-310x470.jpeg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/Chloe-Castaldi-CUNY-Hunters-Student-Recital.jpeg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recital meets students \u201cjury requirement\u201d &#8211; a step which prepares the student to perform in concerts. This individual performance is evaluated by two faculty members and is part of their grade for private\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter student, Alejandro Triana, performed a symphony by classical musician Joaquin Turnia on the oud &#8211; a Middle Eastern guitar &#8211; for his Fall 2019 requirement. Because the oud is not well known, Triana was rejected from many universities. He is Hunter\u2019s first oud student. \u201cBrooklyn College didn\u2019t even know what it was; they thought it was a typo,\u201d he said. \u201cThese guys accepted me, so I feel really grateful to be here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Nowotarski, graduate student at Hunter, played \u201cThe Sinfonia,\u201d by J.S. Bach, for his\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance. Nowotarski was happy with his performance and said he had a lot of fun. \u201cI was a little bit nervous before getting up there, but I usually do when I play,\u201d he said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triana, the oud player, wasn\u2019t thrilled with his own performance.\u201cBecause I\u2019ve been playing so much, The sweat and residue sticks on the little fret boarding, damaging the strings.
