\"\"A group of Dreamers who have been awarded <\/span>t<\/span>he DREAM.US scholarship toward their college degree are organizing to help get the word out about the funding available to students with the same status.<\/span> And they are also using the organization\u2019s workshops to find support and fellowship at a time when they often feel isolated.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At a recent workshop held last month for recipient<\/span>s of the scholarship<\/span> at Hunter, students broke into groups and made plans to raise awareness <\/span>about the<\/span> what the organization calls the \u201cD<\/span>ream <\/span>Team\u201d and<\/span> to grow support <\/span>among the D<\/span>reamer community. The scholarships provide up to $33,000 to students over the course of their four-year education.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI liked the workshop because we were able to speak honestly and come up with ideas that could benefit us in the long run<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said <\/span>O<\/span>.<\/span>, <\/span>a sophomore and a clinical psychology major<\/span>, who asked that her name not be used<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The<\/span> organization<\/span>s<\/span> behind the <\/span>DREAM.US <\/span>scholarship<\/span> believe that D<\/span>ream<\/span>ers should have the opportunity to obtain a college education and contribut<\/span>e<\/span> to the prosperity of <\/span>the country<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the website<\/span>,<\/span> there are now 1.8 million <\/span>Dream<\/span>ers living the U.S.<\/span>, and<\/span> 65,000 graduate<\/span>s<\/span> from high school every year<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span> The scholarship fund is supported by groups like the <\/span>Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Bloomberg Philanthropies<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Program <\/span>d<\/span>irector Gaby Pacheco said <\/span>that<\/span> student<\/span>s who <\/span>receive this award get $14,500 for an associate degree and $29,000 for a <\/span>bachelor<\/span> degree plus <\/span>an <\/span>additional stipend of up to $4,000 or <\/span>$<\/span>1,000 per year for books, supplies and transportation. The award is renewable each year if <\/span>students continue to meet<\/span> the eligibility criteria. <\/span>Hunter is one of the organization\u2019s partner colleges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dreamers are undocumented immigrants who came to the United States at an early age. For many of them, the U.S. is the only country they\u2019ve ever known since many cannot go back to their homeland due to their immigration status.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Officials for the college estimate that Hunter has approximately 500 students who are undocumented. About 15<\/span> to <\/span>20 students <\/span>from <\/span>Hunter get this scholarship every year, according to <\/span>Pacheco<\/span>. And since it started in 2013, the organization has given away 4,000 scholarships nationwide, according to <\/span>its<\/span> website.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The workshops<\/span> held here at the college<\/span> have another purpose, however. They help students who have reason to keep to themselves find support and fellowship.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt taught me that I\u2019m not alone and that there are people and students who can relate to me and help me,\u201d said O<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was nice to speak with other Dreamers going through the same situations you are,\u201d said S., a junior and economics major. But she also said she is afraid that all her hard work will go to waste if legislation does not <\/span>eventually <\/span>legalize DACA receipts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, she finds these workshops helpful since they <\/span>bring<\/span> students together to focus on the goal <\/span>of<\/span> succeed<\/span>ing<\/span> as professionals <\/span>and also<\/span> help others in the same situation and raise awareness.<\/span> It has <\/span>also helped some Dreamers reflect on their family\u2019s status and their own role in American society.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“<\/span>I am proud of my parents because they are the original dreamers. I could never imagine myself going through what they went through<\/span>,\u201d said S.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>They are the strong, the fearless who face the ridicule.<\/span> For myself, I do not speak on my status because there is a certain prejudice that comes from being a dreamer.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
