The winners of t<\/span>his year\u2019s Green Initiative<\/span> included a survey of ways Hunter can add green roofs, a sustainability board game for students, and an app that directs students on how best to recycle. The projects, all proposed by Hunter undergrads, each received funding from the <\/span>program <\/span>and were presented during the college\u2019s Green Week <\/span>in early May.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"The Green Initiative Fund<\/span>,<\/span> also known as TGIF<\/span>,<\/span> is a grant <\/span>program <\/span>that provides money to students<\/span> who come up with ways to make the campus \u201cgreener\u201d or more environmentally friendly. The program has been<\/span> around for <\/span>eight<\/span> years<\/span>;<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>he funds come from 1.25<\/span> percent<\/span> of undergrad students’ fees<\/span>, providing<\/span> a<\/span>pproximately $40,00<\/span>0 for four to six projects and events per year.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first project was <\/span>the <\/span>Green Space Survey, <\/span>a board game developed by City Atlas at Hunter which<\/span> was done by Jaclyn Bernstein<\/span>. It offered<\/span> a fun and interactive way to promote environmental awareness at Hunter<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second project <\/span>was<\/span> a sustainability board game called <\/span>“<\/span>Energetic\u201d<\/span> that look<\/span>ed<\/span> to reduce the impact of climate change<\/span> by<\/span> examining<\/span> various of forms of energy and how we can use our energy <\/span>re<\/span>sources in the most efficient way over the next 20 or 30 years. The game<\/span> was introduced during Green Week by the Sustainability Project and students were able to play.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third project <\/span>was <\/span>a recycling app introduced by <\/span>Helly<\/span> Robinson from the Sustainability Project<\/span> with consulting help<\/span> by alumn<\/span>a<\/span> Lena <\/span>S<\/span>u<\/span>ponya<\/span>. This app is intended to show students how to properly recycle, and there was a beta form available for students to try out during Green Week.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>main goal <\/span>of TGIF <\/span>is to <\/span>get students to think more about ways the college can be more focused on environmental issues. <\/span>TGIF also acts as a lin<\/span>k<\/span> to the different departments to <\/span>provide<\/span> mentors the students along the project process.<\/span> One of the most successful projects was last year\u2019s Eco-Fashion Expo put together by Angela Chi, <\/span>who<\/span> gathered a group of fashion design students to repurpose clothing from thrift shops.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

TGIF also had a conference last year funded by a grant w<\/span>h<\/span>ere students <\/span>could <\/span>promote their ideas<\/span> along with other CUNY schools<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
