An official announcement is pending.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fulbright Scholarships grant students money to teach and conduct research in foreign countries. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It also includes<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">a <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">service requirement wherein the student interacts with the community where they do their work.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Last year\u2019s winners included the following students:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Eleni <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Katechis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a graduate of Hunter\u2019s master<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s program in education,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">traveled to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Taiwan.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Maria <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Malizia<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, another graduate of Hunter\u2019s master<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s program in education,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">headed to Italy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marielle Ray, a 2017 Hunter graduate,<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">use her grant to travel to Argentina to teach English after receiving mentorship from Argentinian professors during her time <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Macaul<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Honors<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">College.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"4\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ardit<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Marku<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an Albanese immigrant who moved to New York speaking <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">no English,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> moved to South Korea to teach non-English speakers his adopted language.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2018 Hunter Valedictorian Michael <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mazzeo<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> traveled to Spain to teach. Before leaving, he hoped to instruct at the high school level.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Victoria <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">DiTomasso<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a Macauley graduate and the lone recipient using the grant to further her studies, w<\/span><\/span>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1189\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"max-width: 368px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1189\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"358\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-310x232.jpg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_5818-e1556585814847-60x45.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">A student inquires about the Fulbright Scholarship<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ent to Germany to work with the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Liebniz<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Institute for Astrophysics <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Postdam<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> studying the galaxy\u2019s most distant visible stars.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fulbright\u2019s online database<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which dates back <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">10<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> years,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> shows that <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">exception of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> 2013-2014<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">when it fell to 31<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">st<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">place, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hunter was a top<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">-20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> ranking producer of Fulbright Scholars every year since 2009<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2019 looks to be another banner year for Hunter, as three unannounced students have received the scholarship and three more await their status as alternates.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Stephen Lassonde, who recently took over the Office of Prestigious Scholarships, believes that Hunter has many unique qualities that make it an ideal breeding <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ground for Fulbright Scholars.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> \u201cOur success in general has to do with the fact that we have a talented student body and we have ta<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lented faculty,\u201d Lassonde says.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559731&quot;:720}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Due to the nature of the grant, there is a language fluency<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> requirement for all applicants.<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lassonde believes that Hunter\u2019s high rate of heritage speakers, or \u201cstudents whose primary language is something other than English,\u201d as he puts it, effectively positions students to qualify for the scholarship. \u201cMany of our students are multilingual,\u201d he says, \u201cand that makes a huge difference.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hunter students receive various forms of preparation throughout their studies. Lassonde noted that faculty members often take notice of individual student and choose to mentor them. He hosts a biannual writing workshop<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to teach students how to write <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">personal statements, an essential skill when applying for any type of grant or scholarship. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There is also an email chain that students can sign up for to keep them in the loop regarding any information sessions or workshops <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">pertaining to their desired scholarship.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Office of Prestigious Scholarships takes great care to nurture each applicant\u2019s needs during the stages prior to application. \u201cI<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> meet with every student who applies for these major fellowships,\u201d said Lassonde. \u201cI coach them through the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and I give them feedback on their applications. I help them understand what\u2019s unusual about themselves.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Lassonde is <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hoping to hire<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> a staff member to focus exclusively on Fulbright applicants. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hunter\u2019s production<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> applicants has reached a rate at which the focus of one person would be an injustice to them.
