Club members from the Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies (CRAASH) co-sponsored the event while members of other clubs, such as the International Club, joined in on the action.<\/p>\n<p>While holding multi-colored, hand-written poster board signs, Jacob Kaye, a member of the International Club, spoke about the importance of the event. \u201cReal wages have been staggering in the U.S. since the 70s,\u201d he said. Kaye then added that it is important for everyone to help teachers by being a part of events such at this one.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow International Club member Daniella Swaby held a similar hand-made sign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the four years that I\u2019ve been here, I\u2019ve only had three professors that were non-adjuncts,\u201d said Swaby, adding that it\u2019s important that adjuncts receive higher pay because they make up most of CUNY schools and are the core of the university\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1178\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 310px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1178 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-310x233.jpg 310w, https:\/\/brie.hunter.cuny.edu\/hunterathenian\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190410_131454_HDR-60x45.jpg 60w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">International Club member, Jacob Kaye.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to reported salaries on Glassdoor, adjunct professors make, on average, about $13 thousand for an average of four courses a year while full-time professors make about $70 thousand on average and can teach up to seven courses a year.<\/p>\n<p>Student Kaya Friedman said that even at SUNY schools, adjuncts are in the same position, where they have to commute between colleges across town since they need multiple jobs to make a living. Friedman said she\u2019s had nine adjunct professors since she transferred to Hunter\u2014that makes up the majority of the classes she\u2019s taken at the college.<\/p>\n<p>Erin Ward, an adjunct professor, said that 72 percent of teachers at Hunter are adjuncts and if they\u2019re teaching the maximum number of classes, which is about two courses a semester, they\u2019re still only making about $21-$25 thousand dollars a year.<\/p>\n<p>Signs that read, \u201cMy colleagues would be here right now if they didn\u2019t have to work another job to make a living wage,\u201d were pasted all over the sky-bridge.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sabrina Rich, one of the co-sponsors of the event, an event like this is very important to her because the Asian-American Studies Department is made up almost entirely of adjuncts\u2014everyone except the director of the department is an adjunct. \u201cEven if it wasn\u2019t affecting us, it\u2019s still important,\u201d Rich said.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Sun, another co-sponsor and member of CRAASH, added, \u201cWe\u2019re advocating for students and adjuncts because our struggles are tied to one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two sat in the middle of the sky-bridge with a large banner that read, \u201c7K or strike,\u201d in bold, black letters.<\/p>\n<p>Other students were walking around with a solidarity letter asking passers-by if they were willing to sign and support the cause.
