Federal grant will help fund health center

A Longwood-based health care agency will receive $812,500 in federal grant money over the next five years to continue providing numerous services for Bronx residents.

The funding for La Casa de Salud is part of the Affordable Care Act, otherwise referred to as Obamacare.

Congressman José E. Serrano today announced in early November that La Casa de Salud is one of two area organizations that will receive $1.1 million in all. The other is the Morris Heights Health Center, which is slated to receive $379,167.

“Expanding community health centers is a key building block for the Affordable Care Act, because it gives new health care options to people in traditionally underserved areas,” said Serrano, adding that the centers ”play an especially important role in delivering health care services in communities with historically high uninsurance rates.”

The grant is part of $150 million the Health and Human Services Department has pledged to distribute nationally in grants for community centers.

La Casa de Salud is a subsidiary of United Bronx Parents and offers primary care, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, dental, gynecological, HIV Specialist, Physical Therapy, and substance counseling, among other services in area daycare centers and schools. They can be reached at 718-842-1412.
