Costumed crusaders flock to Halloween Parade

The teenage zombie-nurse and even younger Spiderman may not know it, but they were marching for a good cause on Oct. 28. For the 26th year in a row, the New South Bronx Halloween Parade brought a mix of Halloween silliness to Hunts Point, along with a mission to improve a community often associated with poverty and violence.

“I think considering the reputation Hunts Point sometimes still has, it’s a way to demonstrate how we have come so much more forward, and have rebuilt this neighborhood,” said parade organizer John Calderon.

Hundreds of people attended this year’s parade, which included a contest for best costume.

The theme for this year was “Healthy Groove”: organizers hoped to educate parade participants about healthy eating habits and new food options in the neighborhood.

“Since this historically has been a food desert until recently,”said Calderon, “we decided to highlight some of the positive things that are going on with healthy food.”

Parade goers seemed to appreciate Calderon’s altruistic intentions. Still, most were just focused on having fun with their kids.

“I just think it’s important,” said Bianca Rivera, who was there with her young daughter. “It’s enjoying life!”
