Volunteers sought for river project

Construction of a new wetlands area across the river from Hunts Point Riverside Park is getting underway, and volunteers are needed to kick the project into high gear.

The new wetland park, called ABC Waterwash, is the brainchild of artist and environmentalist Lillian Ball, who is collaborating with the owner of furniture store ABC Carpet on Bronx River Ave. to convert the area around the store’s immense warehouse building into a park-like setting.

The new area is intended to attract fish, birds and other wildlife, while filtering the pollutants out of water that runs off into the river from the site.

There will also be a walkway from which people will be able to enjoy the new mini-park.

The project’s masterminds are asking volunteers to come help put in native plants through June, while working alongside apprentices from Rocking the Boat, which lies just across the river. Anyone interested can contact the artist at ballstudio@thing.net for details, and can see further details about the project by clicking on http://www.waterwash.info.
